On Man and Reality
Part 2 - Life in the Universe

How is Life Possible in the Universe?
Science has yet to explain how Life is possible in the Universe. The laws, which explain the behaviour of particles, atoms, galaxies, planets and the like, do not explain the behaviour of living organisms. This suggests that such organisms are subject to laws that are additional to those by which physical evolution is governed.

Let us assume that such laws do exist and that they belong to an aspect of Reality that is fundamentally different to the Physical. Let us call the aspect to which they belong, the Eternal Realm and that to which the physical laws belong, the Temporal Realm. The question then arises, how can an element that belongs to the Eternal Realm interact with an element that belongs to the Temporal Realm? How can an aspect of consciousness enter and enliven a physical body?

Human perception suggests that the window through which the integration takes place is the Present Moment. We perceive the present moment as the point through which we gain awareness of and interact with our body and its world. If that is true, then the present moment must be common to both Realms.

Our intuition suggests that each living organism must have its own separate body and conscious aspect, although only the most highly evolved have the organs needed to provide them with awareness of the fact. We give the name “Being” to the conscious aspect of any organism that is aware of being alive. For all other organisms, the business of living is managed without benefit of local awareness.

It is axiomatic that the more highly evolved a living organism becomes, the more highly evolved its aspect of consciousness needs to be. For that need to be met, the process of life evolution must take place simultaneously, in both the Temporal and Eternal Realms, creating a more complex physical body in the one as it creates a more complex conscious aspect in the other.

Death

A living organism will continue to exist only for as long as its body and conscious aspect remain joined. When they become irrevocably separated, a lifeless body is all that remains of it in the Temporal Realm. We have yet to determine what remains of it in the Eternal Realm. The testimony of Mystics suggests that the Being of Humans has evolved to a stage at which it is able to retain some individual existence after death, although robbed of access to its former brain functions. Meditative experience suggests that Humans are evolving sentient access to the Eternal realm – much as animal senses provide them with access to the Temporal Realm.

How Common are Planets Capable of Hosting Life?
As planetary evolution appears to be as natural as that of the stars, which they orbit, planetary systems are likely to surround many, perhaps a majority, of population one stars.

Our own galaxy, the Milky Way, contains about one hundred billion stars, a majority of which are of the population one variety. There are several hundred billion similar galaxies in the Universe, of which the Milky Way is of average size. From all this, it is rational to postulate that the Universe contains hundreds of billion of planets, which are capable of hosting life evolution.
